I for one have stopped using the mass shredding events, and purchased my own shredder.  I did two paper shredding events, in the past.  The first one they shredded the paper on site, the second one they collected the paper then shredded it elsewhere.  About a few months later my husband got a call from our banking, asking if he was available to meet with someone from the bank with regarding his account.  Turns out someone created dummy checks, and tried to cash them in the value of close to $5000 dollars multiple times.   This account we almost never wrote checks on, so we think someone got the information from a shredding event.  Needless to say, we had to go through some hoops to prove it wasn't us.
